The Poznań International Fair (MPT) and the Ministry of the Environment have announced that MPT has been selected to handle the logistics of the biggest global forum on climate policy – the COP24 climate conference. SMM Legal supported MPT throughout the process of contract negotiation; our team, consisting of Ms. Olga Sokołowska and Mr. Maciej Goncerzewicz managed by Mr. Aleksander Czech, Head of our Corporate Department, will continue to provide comprehensive legal advisory related to the organisation of the event.
The decision to contact the organisation of the climate summit to MPT was made in a procedure carried out by the Ministry of Environment based on the so-called special legislation (the Act on special measures related to the organisation of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in the Republic of Poland (O.J. 2018.319).
The COP24, or the 24th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, will be held from 3 to 14 December 2018 in Katowice and will be attended by nearly 30 thousand participants from all over the world, including heads of governments and ministers in charge of the matters related to the environment and climate. It will be accompanied by academic, social, and commercial events aimed at presenting and exchanging ideas, innovation, strategies and solutions to prevent global warming.
The Poznań International Fair is responsible for handling the logistics of the event. Its duties include the construction of temporary conference rooms, ensuring proper signage of the conference venue, as well as the development and handling of computer, IT and energy systems for the purposes of the event.
It is expected that the COP24 will adopt a full package implementing the Paris Agreement. This is the first international agreement in history to oblige all states worldwide to implement actions aimed at protecting our climate. The implementation package will enable practical application of the Agreement. In consequence, it will define the climate and energy policy for the years to come.
