Mr. Rafał Sikorski, holder of a post-doctoral degree and partner at SMM Legal, was the only expert from Poland to participate in the international academic conference “Patent Pledges Symposium 2015” hosted on 12 June 2015 by the American University, Washington School of Law in Washington.
Mr. Rafał Sikorski presented a paper on the access to standard essential patents – patents of particular significance for the implementation of technological standards – in view of EU law, and EU competition law in particular. The problem of access to standard essential patents is a major contemporary issue, particularly urgent on the ICT (information and communication technology) market, in the context of smartphone patent wars. This topic is of key importance for the assurance of competition on the ICT market and instrumental to technological progress.
